Avoiding Preventable Foreclosure – Making Homes Affordable Program

There is government help available for homeowners in financial distress who are having trouble making their monthly mortgage payments.
Borrowers that are current on their mortgage (not more than 30-days late on their mortgage payment in the last 12 months), but are having difficulty making their monthly payments on time, or have fallen behind one or more payments may qualify for a Home Affordable Modification or Home Affordable Refinance.
The Making Homes Affordable program is part of the Obama administration’s Financial Stability Plan. The goal of Making Homes Affordable is to stabilize our housing market and avoid foreclosures by helping Americans reduce their monthly mortgage payments to more affordable levels.
Homeowners struggling to make their monthly mortgage payments due to increased interest rates or reduction in their income may qualify for a Home Affordable Modification, which can provide them with more affordable monthly payments. Homeowners can find out if they are eligible for a Home Affordable Modification by participating in an eligibility questionnaire at http://makinghomeaffordable.gov/modification_eligibility.html
The Home Affordable Refinance program gives up to 4 to 5 million homeowners with loans guaranteed or owned by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac the opportunity to refinance into more affordable terms. Under the program, homeowners who are current on their mortgage payments, but unable to refinance to a lower interest rate because of reduced income or decreased value of their home are able to refinance. Homeowners can find out if they are eligible for a refinance under the Home Affordable Refinance program by participating in an eligibility questionnaire at http://makinghomeaffordable.gov/eligibility.html
