Chiquita Moves Headquarters, R&D to Charlotte NC

It won’t be long now until Chiquita, the mega-company best known for its bananas, will be calling Charlotte home.

Chiquita has confirmed that it will be moving its headquarters to Charlotte, NC and will join the ranks of the many other Fortune 500′s who now call Charlotte home. The corporation is slated to rent space in the NASCAR Plaza office tower.

In addition to its headquarters, Chiquita is also planning to relocate its research and development facilities to Mecklenburg County, which may call for additional space.

Financially speaking, the move is great for both Chiquita and Charlotte. Charlotte will benefit from having yet another super-profitable company in its midst – in 2010 they did about $3.2 million in sales – and the large amounts of space required by Chiquita’s headquarters and research and development facilities will help keep Charlotte’s economy growing and vibrant.

Chiquita gains from Charlotte’s extensively networked international airport, which is better suited to Chiquita’s needs than Cincinnati’s airport (where the company currently resides) as well as the incentives and tax breaks offered by the government in order to entice Chiquita to move.

Chiquita also brings with it many higher-level employees who will be relocating to Charlotte, NC along with the company headquarters. In addition, there will be other positions – approximately 100-200 – that will be vacant when the move happens, offering a small boost in Charlotte employment opportunities.
