In the wake of the mass of foreclosures that has been sweeping the country, there is evidence that many people were evicted from their homes unjustly – and now we’re finally doing something about it.
Homeowners who were foreclosed on in 2009 and 2010 should be receiving letters in the mail from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, who is overseeing the fraudulent foreclosure investigations.
People who feel that they were unjustly evicted from their homes may be entitled to compensation.
Examples of situations that may qualify include:
- unwarranted or inaccurate fees charged related to foreclosure
- a foreclosure that occurred while the homeowner was under bankruptcy protection
- a foreclosure sale that occurred while the homeowner was waiting for a response to a loan modification request from their loan servicer
If you feel that you were wronged during the foreclosure process, please don’t delay to seek review by following the instructions in the letter you receive. Caseworkers are independent third parties whose mandate is to conduct thorough and unbiased reviews of that facts of the foreclosures in question.
The investigations and financial awards that result are due to the shocking news last fall that lenders had been using falsified documents and forged signatures to cut corners during the foreclosure process in an effort to speed things along. For many homeowners, the result was losing their homes when they either could have kept them or at least stayed in them longer.
The type or amount of compensation that wronged foreclosure victims will receive is as yet unclear, but the goal is to right some of the wrongs that occurred during the unjust foreclosure frenzy that took place primarily during 2009 and 2010.
