Is Buying a Home Now a Smart Financial Decision? 8 out of 10 Americans Say Yes!

Considering our nation’s ongoing economic challenges and the state of the housing market, is buying a home now a smart financial decision? Well, according to the 2010 National Housing Pulse Survey, an annual report released this month by the National Association of Realtors®, nearly 8 out of 10 people in America seem to think so.

Americans overall are seeing more stability in the real estate market according to the NAR housing survey. Nearly seven out of 10 say that home values have stabilized in their area and expect home sales to remain about the same through out 2010.  68% of survey respondents say that now is a good time to buy a home, compared to 66% in 2008 and 59% in 2007.

Historically low mortgage rates and lower home prices are attracting buyers to the housing market.  According to the survey, more than 25% of renters say they are thinking more about buying a home than a year ago, 63% say owning a home is a priority in their future and 40% consider owning a home one of their highest priorities.

However, the survey also revealed that concerns about job security are the highest in 8 years of sampling. 70% of respondents said that unemployment and layoffs are a big problem where they live and 8 out of 10 feel that unemployment issues are an obstacle to owning a home.  Although 36% of respondents believe economic issues and unemployment are the main reason for the ongoing foreclosure issue, 51% of respondents see the rate of foreclosures as stabilizing.

According to NAR President Vicki Cox Golder, “While a job recovery is what’s needed right now to get the economy and housing market back on the right track, owning a home continues to be part of the American Dream and one of the best long-term investments in your future.”
