North Carolina will be Home to Facebook’s New Data Center

Facebook has chosen North Carolina as the location for their new data center.  The mega networking company will join Google, Apple, IBM and American Express, all of which currently have data centers in the state. Facebook said it looked all over the East Coast before picking North Carolina, which offers tax breaks to these facilities.

The company’s strategy is to have data center hubs on both coasts of the United States and currently has multiple leased data centers in both Silicon Valley and Northern Virginia.

On November 10th, Palo Alto, CA-based Facebook broke ground on their new $450 million, 300,000-square-foot data center in rural, Rutherford County NC.  The company purchased 150 acres of land from the county, providing plenty of room to grow.

Facebook will be the latest company to build a data center in North Carolina. The facility will be built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold standards and will be one of the most energy-efficient data centers in the U.S.

North Carolina Governor, Bev Perdue, said that negotiations with Facebook have been going on for about a year (check out Governor, Bev perdue’s Facebook page).  ”After a rigorous review of sites across the East Coast, we are pleased to locate our new data center in Rutherford County,” said Tom Furlong, director of site operations for Facebook. “The team we will hire here will help us provide faster, more reliable and more robust service to people around the world who rely on Facebook to connect and share.”

The project is expected to create between 35 and 45 full-time and contract workers and more than 250 construction and mechanical jobs during the building phase.  Additional expansion phases may be possible down the road, depending on Facebook’s needs.
