Preparing Your Kids for Relocation

Moving from one city to another – whether for work or simply a change of scenery – can be daunting, especially with a family in toe.

Preparing your children for relocation is a critical step in the moving process to ensure as smooth a transition as possible.

Sure, you see the possibilities and the excitement. But what about your kids? Are they scared or angry? Are they sad to be leaving their friends, school, and hobbies behind?

At the very least, your kids are probably a little apprehensive, even if they’re excited about the move, too. By being understanding of and having an honest discussion about their feelings, you’re paving the way to a smoother transition, not just on moving day but afterwards, as your kids are settling into their new home and their new lives.

As the adult, of course you have the final say on the move, but that doesn’t mean you can’t involve your kids in the process. Ask your kids how they feel about the relocation. Validate their feelings. Then, turn their attention to the positive aspects of the move.

If mom or dad is getting an awesome new job, great! Tell your kids and encourage them to celebrate in your success. Make sure to explain how your move up the corporate ladder will benefit them, too.

You may also want to try talking about the cool amenities at their new school. Go online with your children and help them figure out where they might like to pick up any hobbies they’re leaving behind, such as dance, karate, etc. Research together the fun activities your new city has to offer: zoos, amusement parks, movie theaters, playgrounds, etc.

Remember to respect your kids’ feelings about relocation. The bottom line may be that they can’t do anything about it, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t allowed to feel sad about it. Set an example for your kids by showing them that it’s possible to look forward to new challenges even as you miss the things you’re leaving behind.
