A group of Mecklenburg farmers, weary of traveling all day by horse and buggie to Charlottetown 25 miles away, decided to secede.
They went to Raleigh where a tie vote was broken by Cabarrus, a NC legislator, supposedly later hanged for horse thievery. He was suspected of taking bribes to break the tie vote and get his name on the county as payback.
