Weddington was known from the earliest colonial times for its’ fertile farmland. It was home to the Waxhaw Indians who prospered there for years. Reuben Boswell, born in 1755 was a native of Spotsylvania County, Virginia and after serving in the Revolutionary War, moved to Mecklenburg County. In 1824, Reuben donated four acres of land for what would become the Sandy Ridge Methodist Episcopal Church. The establishment of the church eventually led to the town, known today as Weddington. The town was actually named after the man Reuben’s daughter married in 1826.
